He was acting like nothing had happened. Theyâd not spoken since sheâd turned up and then left his house last month. He hadnât even texted her to check how she was. This text appeared to suggest she could just snap back into it. She ignored the WhatsApp and shoved her phone into a locker.
The officer guided her to the cell, and another officer brought Emmett in.
Emmett sat down at the table and Rosa noticed that his right hand was slightly shaking. He removed it from the table and sat on it in an attempt to disguise his nerves. His eyes remained low, and he appeared to be biting his lip.
Rosa reached her hands across the table and placed them over Emmettâs left hand, which was clenched in a fist. He looked up and locked eyes with her.
âIâm sorry I got so angry before. This is so scary. I honestly still donât know if I made the right decision saying, âNot guiltyâ.â His voice was shaking.
âYou did the right thing, Emmett. Apology accepted. Look, I want to help you. I really do.â
Emmett looked at her disbelievingly.
âEmmett, I know you donât want to discuss your friends, but they were with you in the park, could they give evidence on your behalf?â
âNo.â
âWe could talk to them. I know court is terrifying, but this really could make a difference in your case.â
âI said no. I donât want my friends involved.â
âTheyâll just be witnesses, Emmett.â
âLook, I donât want to get anyone else into trouble.â
âWhy are you protecting Tyrone and Jayden?â Rosa knew that she needed to push him a little bit further. She hadnât thought about how she would explain knowing their names, but she needed him to open up.
Emmettâs big brown eyes widened, and he rubbed them before a tear could escape. His jaw dropped slightly ajar before his eyes narrowed into a frown.
âHow the fuck do you know those names?â
âEmmett, thatâs not the main issue here. I need you to focus on answering my question. Why are you protecting them? Do they have something over you?â
Emmettâs expression remained perplexed.
âI donât understand. Have they spoken to the police or something? Did the police find them? How do you know their names?â Emmett said, evidently panicking.
âAs far as I know, they havenât spoken to the police,â Rosa said calmly, trying to reassure him.
âYou didnât get their names from me. Whatever happens, they need to know that!â Emmett exclaimed.
âCan I speak to them?â
âNO! Are you crazy? Do you want me to die?â
A shiver ran down Rosaâs spine. Emmett was scared for his life.
âIs there anything else you can tell me, Emmett? Anything at all that might help us help you?â
Emmett shook his head.
âI didnât tell you their names.â
